What is British National (Overseas) (BNO)?

British National (Overseas), commonly known as BNO, is a type of British nationality linked to Hong Kong. Individuals who were British overseas territories citizens connected to Hong Kong could register as BNOs before 1 July 1997.

If eligible individuals did not register and had no other nationality by 30 June 1997, they automatically became British Overseas Citizens.

Important: You cannot apply for BNO status now if you do not already hold it.

What is the Hong Kong BNO Visa?

The Hong Kong BNO visa is a UK immigration route designed for BNO status holders and their eligible family members. It allows you to:

• Live and work in the UK
• Study freely
• Access the NHS
• Build a long-term future

Who Can Apply for a BNO Visa?

You can apply if you are:

• A British National (Overseas), or
• The child (18 or older) of a BNO, born on or after 1 July 1997

Family members can also apply as dependants.

What Are the Requirements?

To qualify for a BNO visa, you must:

• Be aged 18 or over
• Hold BNO status or be an eligible child of a BNO
• Have your permanent home in Hong Kong (if applying from outside) or the UK/HK (if applying within)

Can BNO Visa Holders Work in the UK?

Yes. BNO visa holders have full rights to:

• Work in the UK
• Study in the UK
• Access the NHS

(NHS access is subject to the immigration health surcharge)

You can choose between:
